PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization, and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides broadly based administrative support to the NCI Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC)
  • Serves as liaison between the ACUC and investigators in disseminating policy and procedural guidelines governing animal care and use and in ensuring that animal-based research activities are conducted in compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Coordination and facilitation of animal study proposal (ASP) development, review, approval, and renewal processes
  • Utilizing a web-based ASP data and document management system
  • Serving as central point of contact for users of the system for purposes of training and technical support
  • Provides logistical support to the ACUC including scheduling monthly meetings, scheduling semiannual program reviews, creating agendas, documenting proceedings, maintaining records, and executing actions needed for the meeting and taken as a result of committee deliberations.
  • Coordinates and contributes to the review, modification, and dissemination of ACUC guidelines and standard operating procedures.
  • Coordinates periodic animal facility and laboratory inspections including scheduling, documentation of findings, and documentation of corrective actions
  • Tracks operational metrics (active ASPs, animal usage)
  • Prepares recurring animal-related regulatory reports.
  • Trains laboratory staff and facility staff in the use of the electronic record system.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.
  • No work experience required with a Bachelors degree.
  • Experience in the use of electronic documentation and data management systems.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience. 
  • Possess a high degree of independence and judgment, strong attention to detail, excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills, and use of computer software applications.
  • Knowledge of laboratory animal technology and federal laws, policies, regulations, and procedures governing the care and use of research animals.
  • Knowledge of Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
