PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Frederick National Laboratory is dedicated to improving human health through the discovery and innovation in the biomedical sciences, focusing on cancer, AIDS and emerging infectious diseases.

The Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) directorate works collaboratively and helps to fulfill the mission of Frederick National Laboratory in the areas of biomedical informatics and data science by developing and applying world leading data science and computing technologies to basic and applied biomedical research challenges, supporting critical operations, developing and delivering national data resources, and employing leading-edge software and data science to effectively enable and advance clinical trials.

The Advanced Biomedical Computing Sciences (ABCS) is a part of the Biomedical Informatics and Data Science (BIDS) Program at Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. The ABCS provides technology development, scientific consultation, collaboration and training, and high-performance computing support to the NCI and NIH scientists and staff. The Bioinformatics Training and Education Program (BTEP), established by the Office of Science and Technology Resources (OSTR), is dedicated to increase the awareness and understanding of bioinformatics techniques and processes among scientists in the Center for Cancer Research (CCR),  and to empower CCR scientists to perform a basic, informed set of analyses on their own behalf. The program offers coordinated curriculum of bioinformatics and data science classes, focused workshops and small-group trainings for learners at varying levels of knowledge and experience.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Bioinformatics Trainer is responsible for providing bioinformatics training within the CCR Bioinformatics Training and Education Program (BTEP). Under the direction of the BTEP Program Manager, they will:

  • Take an active role in the development of new, bioinformatics training courses in areas of strong interest to NIH researchers
  • Possess a working knowledge of various NGS technologies (eg. bulk and single cell RNA-Seq, variant analysis, ChIP-Seq, WGS/WES) and analysis tools/pipelines
  • Prepare online teaching that engages learners in a highly interactive environment
  • Develop training materials, deliver training classes, and engage in small group training sessions on various bioinformatics topics both in-person and online
  • Work with the BTEP Program Manager to organize and promote the portfolio of scientific software offered to NCI/CCR by OSTR (Office of Science and Technology Resources)
  • Provide any needed logistical support for BTEP trainings including managing workshop registrations, tracking attendance and obtaining trainee feedback via surveys
  • Help to develop a coordinated curriculum of bioinformatics and data science classes and trainings for learners at varying levels of knowledge and experience, from beginner to intermediate to advanced
  • Assist researchers with a variety of data analysis and informatics related topics (including and not limited to data management, data transfers, data visualization)

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

This position may be filled with a Bioinformatics Trainer I/II commensurate with the selected candidates experience. 

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in life science/bioinformatics/math physics/computer related field or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
    • Bioinformatics Trainer I- No experience beyond a BS degree
    • Bioinformatics Trainer II- In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience
  • Prior teaching experience
  • Some knowledge of Unix command line or scripting languages
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • A Master's or PhD degree in bioinformatics, molecular biology, genomics or similar
  • Prior customer-facing role
  • Prior experience with design, development and deployment of online or classroom-based training courses
  • Prior experience with providing training and developing hands-on workshops
  • Commitment to solving biological problems and communicating these solutions
  • Ability to multi-task across projects

EXECTED COMPETENCIES

  • Excellent communication (oral and written), organization and planning skills
  • Self-motivation, with excellent independent and team working skills
  • Deep understanding of fundamental concepts in molecular biology, bioinformatics, cancer genomics, statistics and data science
  • Ability to understand and analyze data from complex experimental designs
  • Working knowledge in at least two of the following programming languages: Python, R, Perl, Java and C/C++
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas:
    • Exome sequencing, metagenomics, ChIPSeq, RNASeq, DHS-Seq, microarray analysis, DNA methylation analysis
  • Knowledge of working in a cluster environment
