PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Immunological Monitoring Laboratory (IML), Applied and Developmental Research Directorate, provides laboratory support to clinical trials sponsored by NIAID. The primary function of IML is to receive and process clinical specimens (separation of plasma, sera, and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)) and perform cytokine analyses on plasma, sera, or supernatant fluid from cultured PBMC obtained from patients with Herpes simplex virus (HSV), Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), Dengue fever, Lyme, or allergic diseases. The human clinical specimens received by IML are collected under NIAID or NCI Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved clinical protocols. Some clinical specimens are also obtained under IRB-approved protocols conducted at other domestic and international sites.
KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES- Isolation of plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells from whole blood
- Cryopreservation and archival of the isolated biological samples
- Maintenance of databases and inventories of samples to be stored in the Central Repository
- Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous chemical or biological materials or may be located in areas
To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:
- Possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (according to CHEA). (Additional experience may be substituted for the required education)
- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
- Minimum of two (2) years experience
- Knowledge or experience in the isolation of cells from whole blood
- Maintain essential laboratory supplies and equipment
- Operate and maintain sensitive biomedical equipment
- Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance
