 Position Overview:


The Vaccine Clinical Materials Program (VCMP), part of Leidos Biomedical Research at the Frederick National Lab, supports the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC). Its' mission is to advance preclinical and clinical research, product development, and manufacture of novel clinical-stage vaccines and biologics to address current and/or emerging infectious diseases of global significance (e.g. HIV-AIDS, Influenza, Ebola, Malaria, Novel Coronavirus, Tuberculosis). The VCMP is responsible for the operation of a Frederick MD -based pilot plant facility and is actively engaged in cGMP manufacture, testing, release, and supply of Phase I /II clinical products for investigational use in the US and globally.


Reporting to the cGMP Maintenance Supervisor, the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning Mechanic will be able to:

  • Operate and repair cGMP air handlers, roof mounted exhaust fans, reheat coils, cabinet heating systems, and heating hot water distribution systems
  • Experience with 200-ton glycol refrigeration system, and multiple stage reciprocating refrigeration compressors and evaporator systems, condenser fans, and wet/dry evaporator coil systems
  • Chilled water distribution cooling loops for water for injection systems
  • Change and align HVAC belts and sheaves, change out motors and bearings
  • Help maintain and repair refrigerated centrifuges, biosafety cabinets, CO2 incubators, CIP systems, SIP systems, fan coil units, chilled water control valves, heat water control valves, pneumatic controls, chiller water treatment, domestic hot water, and emergency power systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance repair and routines on all assigned equipment and will document/report on all activities in the work order system and logbooks
  • Will train on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and keep training current as required
  • Possess a current EPA 608 Refrigerant License
  • Must be available for emergency on call as needed
  • Must be familiar with cGMP policies and procedures pertaining to Good Manufacturing practices while working with drug product
  • Must be proficient with Schlender Electric Building Automation System 3.2, automation servers, and all peripherals associated with operating system 


To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of a high school diploma
  • Five (5) years of HVAC-related experience is required
  • Requires Universal Refrigerant Transition & Recovery Certification
  • Ability to read blueprint and schematics relating to air conditioning and refrigeration systems; apply standard practices and techniques. Perform simple arithmetic calculations
  • Knowledge of reciprocating high tonnage air conditioning systems (350-1,000 tons); pneumatic, electronic, and mechanical control systems; simple plumbing techniques normally associated with air conditioning and refrigeration
  • Must be able to follow routine safety practices in the HVAC trade
  • Ability to routinely life and carry up to 50 pounds; climb stairs and ladders
  • Must be able to work in an environment involving bending, stooping, confined spaces, potential exposure to particulates, vapors, and noisy environments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • GMP experience with clean and dirty utilities
  • Experience with pharmaceutical manufacturing environments and GMP control


  • This position is subject to working in or have the potential to exposure to high noise levels for extended periods of time requiring medical clearance
  • This position may require continuous or intermittent exposure to and exertion in environmental conditions such as working outdoors, temperature extremes, humidity extremes. etc. as part of the job
