Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Environment, Health and Safety Directorate at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick provide comprehensive professional EHS services to employees working in general offices, industrial shops, experimental research laboratories, and animal care environments. Work is performed within the offices of the EHS Directorate and across the campus in various customer locations.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Locksmith will:

  • Install, replace, disassemble, and repair lock mechanisms on existing doors, windows, and associated hardware systems, manual and electronic locksets, mechanical lock sets, combination lock sets, closers, hinges, electric strikes, and slide mechanisms
  • Use a variety of hand and shop tools in the installation and repair of locking mechanisms
  • Open/repair malfunctioning lock mechanisms; Open locks with a pic set when necessary
  • Remove, replace, repair lock cores
  • Read, comprehend and follow instruction guides
  • Manage a high volume of work orders for Locksmith services both on the FNLCR as well as off-site facilities
  • Coordinate maintenance and upgrade of locking hardware and access control systems at NCI campus and off-site locations
  • Work with a wide variety of locks manufactured by different companies; specialized locking systems, and safe combinations
  • Monitor inventory and place orders for supplies; maintain adequate inventory required for daily preventative measures as well as critical and emergency repairs and replacements
  • In cooperation with Security/Access Control, maintain secure and accountable access throughout Frederick National Lab facilities, as well as comprehensive records for cores and keys
  • Observe safety standards
  • This position is subject to 24-hour call in (rotating schedule) for emergency repairs

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession of high school diploma or equivalent
  • In addition to the education requirement, a minimum of four (4) years of craft-related experience
  • Knowledge of or experience with a variety of lock mechanisms, mechanical lock sets, electronic and combination lock sets
  • Experience with installing, replacing, repairing lock mechanisms and associated hardware systems, on both manual and electronic locksets
  • Experience fabricating precision cut keys
  • Experience with the use of standard tools used in the Locksmith trade
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instruction guides
  • Must have and maintain a valid State Driver's License
  • Per policy, must have no more than 3 demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty-six (36) months
  • Ability to perform physical duties including lifting and carrying up to and exceeding 100 lbs.
  • Duties include walking, standing, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and working in confined areas, potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of FNPA 80: Standard for Fire Doors and other Opening Protectives
