 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (FNL) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by the prime contractor Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. FNL is responsible for pursuing a unique mission in translational and applied biomedical research that is unsuitable for academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or other federal contractors. The selected candidate will join the Natural Products Support Group located at the NCI-Frederick campus. 

The Natural Products Support Group (NPSG) provides scientific and technical support to the Developmental Therapeutics Program (DTP) of the NCI Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD). The group is comprised of several laboratories responsible for various natural product-based support activities including extraction of plant, microbial, and marine biota; pre-fractionation of natural product extracts; isolation and identification of biologically active natural products; preforming cryopreservations and microbial fermentations; and in-vitro and in-vivo drug preparations. 

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Performing a wide range of scientific support studies, with an increasing emphasis in the area of microbial secondary metabolites. The responsibilities will include:

• Media preparations for fungal cultures
• Bench-scale fungal fermentations
• Extraction of fungal cultures
• Maintenance and troubleshooting of microbiology laboratory equipment
• Laboratory housekeeping

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• Possession of a Bachelor's degree in microbiology or biology from an accredited college or university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.  Foreign degrees will be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
• Knowledge of microbiology laboratory techniques

The Post-Baccalaureate Program is for individuals who meet any ONE of the following criteria:
-College graduates who received their bachelor's degrees less than THREE years prior to the date they begin the program,
-Individuals who are more than 3 years past the receipt of their bachelor's degree but received a master's degree less than SIX MONTHS before they begin the program, OR
-Students who have been accepted into graduate, other doctoral, or medical school programs and who have written permission from their school to delay entrance for up to one year to pursue a biomedical research project at the NIH.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Sterile technique experience
• Knowledge of specialized microbiology lab equipment
• Knowledge of safety procedures in a microbial laboratory
• Experience in the fermentation of fungal samples
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to operate and maintain laboratory equipment with independence
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
• Excellent communication skills and a capacity to work in a team environment

JOB HAZARDS

• This position is subject to atmospheric conditions that would require the usage of a respirator, requiring a medical clearance
