The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION         

The Occupational Health Services (OHS) program at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research at the National Cancer Institute at Frederick provides comprehensive professional occupational health nursing care to employees working in general offices, industrial shops, experimental research laboratories, and animal care environments. Work is performed within the clinic providing occupational, urgent and emergency post exposure to biological, chemical, radiation exposures.

The NCI Frederick clinic operates Monday thru Friday 8am to 4:30pm and the ATRF clinic operated from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collect information about the health status of employees by interviews, occupational health histories, physical examinations and diagnostic tests
  • Counsels and advises employees on health matters, prepares and maintains employee medical and health status records
  • Rotates on call with the clinical staff and will respond to emergencies and render first aid
  • Collaborates with the NP or medical consultant for post exposure care for biological emergencies per written medical protocols
  • Documents using the electronic medical record program
  • Demonstrates expertise in occupational health, individual initiative, critical thinking and independent judgment
  • Engages in primary health care decision-making in collaboration with nurse practitioners' and other members of the occupational health team
  • Provides clear communication to the nursing team; provides concise documentation in reports and clearly explains the plan of care/discharge
  • Edits or composes documents and standard operating procedures
  • Coordinates classes for CPR certification and re-certification classes for all employees required or requesting certification, as well as instructing basic first aid and stop the bleed
  • Responsible for Worker's Compensation responsibilities such as filing new claims, record keeping and follow up in relation to all new/open worker's compensation cases
  • Assists in the promotion of wellness events for all employees at NCI Frederick

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a field related discipline or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree. Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • Education Accreditation as well as a Degree or diploma from a professional nursing program approved by the legally designated State accrediting agency at the time the program was completed
  • Must have active, current registration as RN in Maryland
  • No work experience required with a Bachelor's degree and current active RN license
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • One (1) year of experience in a hospital setting, ambulatory clinic or health care setting
  • Certification in Occupational health nurse (COHN) or equivalent
  • Physical Assessment and Certification or willingness to certify in spirometry, hearing conversation, first aid/CPR instructor and/or instructor trainer and case manager
