The Frederick National Laboratory is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC) sponsored by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and operated by Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc.  The lab addresses some of the most urgent and intractable problems in the biomedical sciences in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious diseases.

 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Facilities Maintenance and Engineering (FME) Directorate is responsible for laboratory space, administrative space, infrastructure, campus landscape, planning, and design, and construction management at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Sheetmetal Worker:

  • Fabricates tanks, safety hoods, steam sterilizers and laboratory sinks
  • Selects metals capable of withstanding anticipated operational conditions
  • Lays out and shapes metals to unusual contours and fit metals together to close tolerances
  • Makes a variety of seams and assembles components by soldering, riveting and spot welding
  • Repairs duct work, exhaust piping, and all types of sheet metal components
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, sketches, and verbal instructions
  • Uses basic geometry and arithmetic
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by a responsible authority
  • Works independently using standard trade techniques
  • This position is subject to 24-hour call in (rotating schedule) for emergency repairs

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of high school diploma or equivalent
  • In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years of craft-related experience
  • Knowledge of the physical properties of a wide variety of sheet metals
  • Experience with the fabrication of metal products
  • Must have the ability to routinely lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; climb stairs and ladders; work involves bending, stooping and working in confined areas; potential exposure to particulates, vapors or noisy environment
  • Must have and maintain a valid State Driver's License issued by the state in which the incumbent/candidate resides for each class of vehicle to be operated on company business
  • Must have no more than 3 demerit points in the previous twelve (12) months or five (5) demerit points in the preceding thirty-six (36) months per policy
  • Experience with construction safety practices
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Familiarity with scientific/laboratory equipment
  • Experience with standard welding techniques
