 Position Overview:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION         

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services that are focused on the design, generation, characterization and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease, which are aimed at the development of targeted diagnostics and therapies. LASP contributes to advancing human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

KEY ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES

The Documentation Specialist II position serves as a liaison for animal research data management systems (e.g., FACILITY) and other electronic/web-based applications.  This position works on problems of diverse scope in which analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. This position interacts with all levels of staff including principal investigators on the Bethesda and Frederick campuses. The Documentation specialist must have excellent judgment and organizational skills in order to effectively manage a significant and complex workload. The following are functions expected to be performed by the Documentation Specialist II position:

  • Act as the POC/liaison between LASP and IT including 3rd party vendor, for the animal research data management system (FACILITY)
  • Troubleshoot and track data management issues, independently exercising judgment to select appropriate methods and techniques for obtaining solutions
  • Coordinates application installations/upgrades/enhancements and assesses system needs by working with end users, IT support personnel and commercial vendor
  • Generates and maintains program documentation to include (but not limited to): standard operating procedures, quality assurance reports, user listings, account requests, training materials, training records, time-sensitive reports, and equipment service requests
  • Document log updates, databases and other electronic documents; reviews documents for accuracy and completeness
  • Data entry for a variety of essential program functions
  • Work with investigators and facility management to optimize records and reports
  • Coordinates and provides training in the animal research data management system for users. (Users will include staff within; LASP and Government Labs)
  • Perform quality assurance/census analysis to ensure data accuracy; QA will require entrance into animal holding rooms which will require the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols
  • Coordinates the importing and exporting shipments of animals and samples, including scheduling and documenting the tracking of diagnostic samples
  • Provides back-up administrative support to the facility including but not limited to: setting up meetings, answering phones, and ordering supplies
  • Assignments are performed independently, but routinely reviewed by the supervisor

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Possession of Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university according to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) in a field related to biomedical research (i.e. biomedical science/bioinformatics/math/computers) or four (4) years relevant experience in lieu of degree.  Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency
  • In addition to education requirements, a minimum of 2 years related experience 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to set-up and maintain computer-based file
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to prepare reports, arrange meetings, and schedule and coordinate work
  • Experience and skills in utilizing databases and other software to manage animal colony and research data
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain precise, accurate records and data collection
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • Knowledge of laboratory animal management software
  • Working knowledge of laboratory animal science terminology is preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of FACILITY database software
  • Experience using CostPoint; Core 360; Deltek
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures for animal facilities and the basic requirements for maintaining laboratory animals
  • Basic animal handling skills
  • Experience coordinating shipments
